- Investigation and surveillance: “Disease investigators” collect data from records, interviews, surveys, and laboratory specimens to determine who is infected, their symptoms, and how and when they were exposed.
- Data analysis: Using statistical programs to analyze demographic trends and disease patterns to detect epidemic outbreaks and identify groups at risk
- Research and development: planning and directing research studies to develop prevention and control strategies, and writing grant proposals to fund research
- Developing health programs: managing public health programs and monitoring their progress, evaluating the impact of preventive programs, and making recommendations to improve them
- Communication and reporting: Communicate their findings to health practitioners, policy makers and the public, and make recommendations for interventions
